In 1988 Chevron assembled a project team to review the investment opportunities in a focused effort to optimize diatomite exploration. After a substantial amount of research concerning Lost Hills assets property value, the group recognized the present net value had the potential to be significantly larger. The reservoir had unique characteristics and poorly understood properties, which led the team to believe that with improved productivity and extensive technical evaluation, gains could be achieved. Ultimately, a demand in change of the basic fracture stimulation design was implemented and the team sought out to create a long term relationship with a single fracturing service company to help reach the full potential of Lost Hills fields. The affiliation of the two has played a key role in recognizing the field’s endless possibilities.

The diatomite is a very fragile rock and its likelihood to fracture is a high percentage. The inter-layer boundaries are weakly connected and ready to part when the fluid pressure changes. And because of their size, oil discoveries are extremely difficult. The oil-bearing diatomite formations attract special attention worldwide from companies like Rock Energy Resources Inc. (RCKE.PK) and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX). The giant diatomaceous oil-bearing fields in California, Lost Hills, and Santa Barbara County, contain some ten billion barrels of oil in place.

Oil present in diatomite rock formations can be found in scattered parts of the world. Kern County, California is where one of the first regions of these rocks was found. The Kern River Oil Field, which was the breakthrough in Kern’s oil production, currently contributes more than three-quarters of all the oil produced onshore in California. The Lost Hills Oil Field is one of the famous oil fields in Kern County. While only the 18th largest in the state in size, it remains ranked in the top ten out of approximately 110 million oil productions still in the ground today.

Another diatomite formation can be found in the Santa Barbara County area. This area is said to be the most untapped oil reservoirs in the state of California. Giving companies like Rock Energy Resources (RCKE.PK) a precise reason to implement oil production in the area, in their case, through steam injection.

Steam injection is an increasingly common method of extracting heavy oil. There are several different forms of the technology currently being used to do so, however, the two are said to be the most proficient are Cyclic Steam Stimulation and Steam Flooding. Both of which are commonly applied to oil reservoirs, which contain crude oils of the native underground formation.

Cyclic Steam is a method that consists of three stages: injection, soaking, and production. The process can be quite effective, especially in the first few cycles. It is typically able to recover 20% of the oil in place. It is common for wells to be produced in the cyclic steam manner for a few cycles before being put on a steam-flooding regime with other wells. It is said that this method produces oil at much higher rates than a conventional production well in a similar environment.

When the Steam Flood process is performed, some wells are used as steam injection wells and others are used for oil production. Throughout the flooding process two mechanisms are at work to improve the amount of oil recovered. The first is to heat the oil to higher temperatures so it flows smoothly through the formation in wells. The other is a physical displacement employing, in which oil is pushed to the production wells. At this point in the steam flooding more steam is needed than what is used in the cyclic method; yet, it is typically more effective at recovering a larger portion of the oil.

Rock Energy isn’t implementing this oil production strategy because of its proven success with other companies such as Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX), a company that has drilled in the Lost Hills and in the Kern County area. Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY) also has their operations in place in the Bakersfield, California that lies in the Kern County area. Rock Energy Resources Inc. (RCKE.PK) shares a fence line in the Orcutt area with Breitburn Energy Company, LLC, who engages in acquisition, exploration, development, and production of oil and gas properties.
